The first step for anyone over 18 years of age, International Students, and US Immigrant adults to obtain a Michigan driver’s license is to get a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP). The State of Michigan requires you to practice for at least 30 days before taking your driving test.

We will help you understand the rules of the road for experienced or new drivers. LDA will show you was to anticipate, avoid, and survive the hazards on the road.

    Only U.S. citizens and residents with temporary or permanent legal presence may apply for a Michigan driver’s license.

    Present Appropriate Documentation

    Once you have studied, you will need to present the following documents at the Secretary of State (SOS) when you’re ready to test for your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP).

    • Social Security number or letter of ineligibility
    • U.S. citizenship or legal presence
    • Identity
    • Michigan residency

    Knowledge, Road Signs, and Vision Tests

    Pass vision test, road signs test, and physical standards.

    Pass knowledge test – given at a Secretary of State (SOS) office, required to get a TIP.

    Pay $25 fee for TIP at SOS:

    • Valid for 180 days
    • Required to take driving test

    Temporary Instruction Permit

    A Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) allows you to practice driving with a licensed driver (21+) for up to 180 days. A TIP is issued if you are 18 years or older, and:

    • Have never been licensed
    • Hold an expired foreign driver’s license
    • Hold a Michigan driver’s license or a license from another state that is expired for more than four years

    Now that you have your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), you can begin to schedule your drives.

    • State requires you practice for at least 30 days prior to taking a driving test

    Return to SOS Office

    • After passing the driving test, take the test certificate, TIP, and form of identification to Secretary of State office
    • License will be issued
    • A limited-term license will be issued to residents who have temporary legal presence

    • Restrictions may apply for medical conditions
    • First license – three-year probation

    Testing

    Knowledge Test

    You will be given a knowledge test to determine how well you know Michigan traffic laws and safe driving practices. Applicants age 18 or older will be given this test at the Secretary of State office when applying for a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP).

    If you are required to take a knowledge test for your original operator or chauffeur license, arrive at the Secretary of State office at least one hour before closing to allow enough time to complete the test.

    If you have difficulty speaking or reading English, branch office staff will provide a list of available spoken language interpreters. Printed translations of the knowledge tests are also available in many languages. Please contact the branch office in advance to obtain a list of interpreters. Hearing-impaired customers can request a sign language interpreter in advance of a branch office visit or may use an interpreter they know.

    Driving Skills Test

    You must pass a driving skills test if you have never been licensed and are applying for an original driver’s license, or your driver’s license has been expired for more than four years. Driving skills tests are administered by independent driver testing businesses approved by the Secretary of State.

    A list of approved driver testing businesses is available at all branch offices and on this Web site. Be sure to ask the driver testing business you choose about its fees before scheduling your test. The Secretary of State does not set the driving skills test fee.

    The first part of the driving skills test requires you to pass a series of off-street, closed-course maneuvers. After passing the first part, you must then pass a road skills test to receive your driving skills certificate. The road skills test includes urban, expressway, rural highway, and residential driving.

    Complete study information is provided in the Secretary of State publication Driving Skills Test Study Guide available at any branch office, or on this Web site. You should review this study guide thoroughly before taking the driving skills test. Once the driving skills test is passed, you are eligible for a Michigan driver’s license. If you have a driver’s license issued by another state, the driving skills test may be waived.

    Temporary Instruction Permit

    A Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) allows you to practice driving with a licensed adult for up to 180 days. A TIP is issued if you are age 18 or older and:

    • Have never been licensed
    • Hold an expired foreign driver’s license
    • Hold a Michigan driver’s license or a license from another state that is expired for more than four years

    Before obtaining a TIP, you must provide documentation of a valid Social Security number, U.S. citizenship or legal presence, identity and Michigan residency. You must also pass a vision and written knowledge test. In certain cases, a road sign test may be required.

    You must practice driving with a licensed adult for at least 30 days before you are eligible to take the driving skills test with a driver testing business. After successfully completing your driving skills test, take your skills test certificate, TIP and appropriate identification documents to a Secretary of State office to obtain your driver’s license.

    Social Security

    Michigan law requires the Department of State to collect and verify Social Security numbers before issuing a driver’s license or state identification card.
    (Michigan Vehicle Code, 1949 PA 300, as amended by 1998 PA 330; and State Identification Card Act, 1972 PA 222, as amended by 2008 PA 31.)

    Social Security numbers are used for child support collection and to assist in establishing identity.

    What do I have to bring to a Secretary of State office to prove I have a valid Social Security number?

    The following documents will be accepted:

    • Your Social Security card.
    • W-2 or 1099 form.
    • Pay stub containing your name and Social Security number.
    • Valid U.S. military ID card with photo (DD-2 or CAC card). (Documents expired less than one year will also be accepted.)
    • If you are ineligible for a Social Security number, you must have a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration attesting to that fact. Letters that are more than 30 days old won’t be accepted.

    All Social Security information will be verified. If you fail to provide a valid Social Security number or provide proof demonstrating your ineligibility, your driver’s license or state ID application can’t be processed.
